In the end, it's all about perception. So if the world "thinks" flash is heavy and loading is obnoxious, then it is. I think we can all agree there are many technical ways to counter all of these flash "Weaknesses". The problem is, they aren't easy to do, nor is there any formula to the solution. Adobe needs to step in and showcase a way to make it simple for everyone to use best practices with Flash. The development community has done a great job of publishing these techniques, but Adobe needs to take the lead and make the technology invisible, instead of the market having to apologize for it.

I get frustrated with these myths as well. There's still this massive misconception that if there's Flash involved, it's going to be this massively overbloated, huge download based site. I still hear the false argument of "flash doesn't allow the user to use the back button on the browser..". It's not flash that doesn't allow the user to do that, it's the person designing/developing with flash who makes that decision.

Thank you for putting some of your thoughts and observations to "paper". :)

Nice article. I actually didn't realize some people still blamed Flash for being "heavy" - let alone a VP from Razorfish? You can't blame the tool, only how the tool is used. Kind of embarrassing comments from a leading Internet Agency.

<em>"The myth that flash is heavy, and causes long load times is one I have been battling with fact and frustration for years."</em>

Thanks for the continued effort. I agree that it can be frustrating to try to raise simple facts above the noise machine. But in the long run, truth does out... they've got a harder job than we do. ;-)
